With so much beauty, it is a wonder the three of you did not have to defend yourselves from the male population of Crewe with shotguns and pepper spray!
As for the house. . .start consulting DIY books about sealing cracks and providing better insulation. Start looking for some inexpensive, yet energy-efficient, room-sized dehumidifiers. Open a window when you have a nice steamy shower or bath, or when you're cooking pasta or rice. And perservere! If you do, I'm sure you'll have a nicer, chic-er Chez Zoe than the place in Belgium!
If you are unemployed you can get your house insulated for free- cavity wall & loft insulation. All the power companies pay into some kind of fund, out of which comes the money to pay for your insulation. I had a similar experience to you last year after returning to the UK, and this was the only 'plus' that happened, although I only found out by accident - no-one told me about it (of course)

Great suggestion from Julie - I took advantage of subsidised insulation scheme here to get my basement attacked - the difference over winter was amazing.

The trouble with the free loft insulation and walls is that the loft is 'insulated enough' - the previous owner had it down a few years ago and we have had it assessed - and I don't have cavity walls. Arse!

Back again, albeit late, to wish you and yours a wonderful new year. Hope all are keeping warm enough -- but not too warm -- during this odd winter.
(I'm in Chicago, and we've only had snow twice so far -- and it's melted within a few days. The other weekend, I saw someone skateboarding in the clothing commonly called a "wife beater" and "board shorts." I have never, ever in my (mumblety) years seen anyone doing that here in January. Yet, a year ago, we had a blizzard that dumped snow so fast removal equipment couldn't keep up. Hundreds had to abandon their cars on Lake Shore Drive because the snowfall and drifting were so bad!)
Anyway, another suggestion on the insulation problem: Would so-called foam board insulation work in your place? It's a product that comes in sheets, similar to plywood. but that is made of flame-resistant versions of Styrofoam or similar. It's usually applied in one of two ways -- either attached to the inside of the wall studs and covered with drywall OR more often attached to the outside walls and covered with clapboard or siding. The latter is also often the less expensive of the two.

Squirrel.....I have always found them different - they have different bone structures, looks, temperaments - heights, even.
This was the first time that they had met Richard and they really took to him which was lovely:)
